Kapow! Comic Convention hosted a perfect atmosphere, bursting with laughter, smiles and people striking superhero stances at every corner. Joe Quesada, an audience with Warren Ellis, exclusive footage from Storage 24, Nick Frost, comics, merchandise, more comics… imagine if Willy Wonka did comics, yes, that!
I walked around, I sat outside, I asked one guy if he was Bananaman, he wasn’t (oppps!), another spoke to me about how desperate he was for a wee but his stormtrooper costume had a zip that was impossible for him to reach alone. Another man, a Jedi, told me about how he wanted to enter the cosplay competition, but couldn’t wear his costume on Sunday as rain was expected. I met an amazing range of people, got snapped with Spider-Man and Wolverine (the arms!), laughed lots and was welcomed into their groups. For me it was refreshing to people-watch, to see others embracing their true selves, inspiring and aspiring, not caring what anyone else thought. I think I could learn a lot from them.
Oh, and, considering I’ve been asked repeatedly about Ian Livingstone, since I wrote that novel of mine with eleven endings, it was totally overwhelming to meet him. I bought him cake, he didn’t ask for that cake, I simply thrust a slice in his face. I’m sure I’ve said before that I should NEVER meet people I’ve put up on a pedestal for years. Oh yes, let me just cringe and move on…
And, for you, here’s a taste of some of the sights I saw yesterday. I’ll put some more on my Facebook page later too. I think the organisers of Kapow Comic Con, sisters Lucy and Sarah, should be very proud. I look forward to 2013.
