I don’t tend to do personal memes but this one’s got me thinking, so if you could indulge me for a while…
There are only a few books that I’ve ever read twice, but there are films that I’ll watch over and over again. There are certain films that I always watch when I’m feeling low and it seems that films have always been my escape, more so than books. Films give me easy visuals and the ones that force an emotional reaction are my favourites. Maybe I’m lazy, but when I’m low I’ll always turn to film, rather than book. It’s really rather simple.
And so, as stolen from the wonderful Mrs Lister, I’ve pulled together a list of my favourite films. I couldn’t manage 10, so here are my top 11 (almost) beloveds:
Elf: “[phone rings, Buddy picks it up] Buddy the Elf, what’s your favourite colour?” I love the innocence of this film. It, quite simply, makes me happy.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s: “I’m not Holly. I’m not Lula Mae, either. I don’t know who I am! I’m like Cat here, a couple of no-name slobs. We belong to nobody and nobody belongs to us. We don’t even belong to each other.” An exploration of struggling with being needed or wanted, for the right reasons. This film defines beauty.
Pretty in Pink: “May I admire you again today?” Everyone needs a Duckie in their life. And Andie’s line, ‘I just want them to know that they didn’t break me,’ makes me cry every single time.
X-Men (all of them): Wolverine, super powers, leather, mutants, dark and light. Genius. Enough said.
Betty Blue: An exploration of sexual attraction, passion, love, obsession and mental illness. It’s a bit pretentious, in that many students had the poster on their wall because it was seen as cool, but for me it was never about the cool factor. This film influenced me, it matched my connection with darkness and wonky love. This is explicit storytelling that doesn’t shy away from extremes. Love it.
Brief Encounter: I hate the film ending, but absolutely adore the scene in the railway station café. This is my ‘cup of tea, lying on the sofa on a cold, grey afternoon’ film.
Truly Madly Deeply: Juliet Stevenson is amazing. This film makes my stomach twist and Juliet’s portrayal of grief is utterly convincing. The clip I’ve linked to makes my cry (and this film is the reason why Nina is called Nina in ‘Like Bees’).
It’s a Wonderful Life: Best Christmas film ever. “You want the moon? Just say the word and I’ll throw a lasso around it and pull it down.” Sometimes it’s good to realise all that you have.
Star Wars (original 3): Epic storytelling at its absolute best. Darth Vader is my favourite and I wish George Lucas was my dad. (Although Jar Jar Binks, what’s that all about?)
Toy Story (all 3): An emotional roller-coaster in animated film. The first film was about when I started my journey into motherhood and the third came out just as Eldest was becoming a teen. These films are ace.
E.T.: He’s lost, he’s alone, he’s such a long way from home. He NEEDS me. I don’t think I could ever love/be friends with anyone who didn’t love ET. Simple. (This is where I lose many friends, yes?)

So, any of you care to share your top 10 films? Oh go on. I wanted to include at least another 5 (Tarantino!) but rules are rules…

A little bit different to your choices but here goes, first 10 favourites I think of -
Con Air (far too many weirdos on one plane),
Strictly Ballroom (greek tragedy in Australia),
Broken Arrow (‘don’t shoot at the thermo-nuclear devices!’),
Muriel’s Wedding ( life’s even better than an Abba song),
The Rock (‘whiners always say they did their best, winners go home and ***** the prom queen’),
Die Hard (the first is best),
Alfie (Jude Law’s remake),
House of Flying Daggers
Bride and Prejudice (the best Mr & Mrs ‘Bennet’ ever)
OK I only came up with 9, but it offsets your 11.
Muriel’s Wedding - I haven’t seen that for years! Must watch it again. And I’ve been meaning to watch ‘Bride and Prejudice’… fab list! X
Hmm. Boat’s broken so I have thinking time, but no doubt I’ll reel off the first ten I can think of..here goes.
1. Good Will Hunting. The script, the story, the accents…
2. Bill and Ted (both). Perfect nostalgia. I still quote them both in my head constantly.
3. Still Crazy. Makes me laugh a lot, some of my favourite actors, discovered it with my brothers.
4. Mona Lisa Smile. Just for the fact that Stiles’s character doesn’t do the obvious feminist-girl-power thing.
5. Breakfast Club. Actually, I’m going to throw in St Elmo’s Fire and Pretty In Pink too.
6. The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou. Boats, Bill Murray, Anjelica Huston, Willem Dafoe, jaguar shark.
7. The Shining. It’s just beautiful, even disregarding the story (but you must not disregard the story).
8. Strangers On A Train. Exciting, excellent neat plot, and the scene with the merry go round at the end is my favourite film scene ever.
9. How To Marry A Millionaire. Glorious indulgence.
10. Deathproof. Cracking soundtrack.
11. (am I allowed? I couldn’t not have Sorkin) A Few Good Men. Didn’t even mind Tom Cruise!
Actually can I have 12 and 13 too? Rain Man and Philadelphia.
I’ll stop now.
Ace list, Missy! I think the ‘reeling off the first 11′ is best. Love so many you’ve included. ‘Breakfast Club’ and ‘Strangers On A Train’ should be on my list xxx
An impossible task. I managed to get it down to twelve.
Alphaville
Blade Runner
Brazil
Dark City
Empire of the Sun
The Fifth Element
The General (Buster Keaton)
The IPCRESS File
Orlando
Quatermass and the Pit
Stalker (Tarkovsky)
Themroc
Twelve is impressive! I have watched 6 of your 12 and will aim to watch the others too. Thanks for playing along!
Fab - can I play? I love your choices - particularly Pretty In Pink and The Breakfast Club, they’re on my list too. I like them because they are about Freaks/outsiders, and I can identify with that, that’s my tribe, that is. Also they have Andrew McCarthy and Judd Nelson in,Say No More. So:
(in no particular order)
1 Pretty In Pink
2 The Breakfast Club
3 Wings of Desire - Wim Wenders (actually this has to be my number one)
4 Moulin Rouge
5 Whale Rider
6 Hairspray (John Waters original)
7 Guys and Dolls
8 Charlie and The Chocolate Factory
9 Breaking The Waves
10 Orlando
Can I have a number 11? (Grease) : )
How could I have missed off ‘Grease’? I have fond memoies of my once 4 year old knowing all the inappropriate songs and script! And ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ - am hoping you mean the original? I haven’t seen ‘Wings of Desire’ but I will! Love your list very much, it’s made me want to add ‘Mamma Mia’ to mine too, even though you didn’t mention it! x
Ooh - and Desperately Seeking Susan too? That’s 12,2 more than ten. Oops!
LOVE that film! x
Great - saved from doing the banking - but what a challenge. Here’s my top 10 all of which I ‘m happy to watch and re-watch (no particular order) and I completely agree completely that it is much easier to turn to a film than a book when low.
1. Withnail and I
2. The Hours
3. Truly Madly Deeply (couldn’t watch this for 2 years after my husband died, always has me in bits but just a wonderful film - if the rest got swept off the desert island this is the one I’d cling on to)
4. Lost in Translation -
5. Priscilla Queen of the Desert -
6. Evening
7. Shooting the Past (I know it was for TV but I have it on dvd stacked with other films so am sneaking it in here)
8. The Piano
9. Moulin Rouge
10. Atonement
and 10.5 - Chocolat - I have to get Johnny Depp in there somewhere!
Hello lovely Mary! I share your love of ‘Truly Madly Deeply’ - it leaves me breathless. And ‘Chocolat’ needs to be on my list… I can’t believe I haven’t included a bit of Johnny! I haven’t seen ‘Evening’ and am curious… will search it out. Thanks for playing along x
Oh this is fun! Okay, not my favourite ten because I have way more favourites than that, and I’ve left out ones that would be on there because others have chosen them (It’s a Wonderful Life) but here goes:
Trains, Planes and Automobiles - laugh out loud with an unexpected ending
Lock Up - Donald Sutherland is awesome
Shawshank Redemption - never give up hope!
The Great Escape - Donald Pleasence’s last scene makes me cry
Waterloo Bridge - (the 1940 version)
Dirty Dancing- Nobody puts baby in a corner
Sea of Love - Ellen Barkin and Al Pacino
The Hunger - just because it introduced me to my favourite piee of music ever - Delibes ‘Flower Duet’
The Crying Game - ‘that’ twist
Gone with the Wind - Just because
Ask me again tomorrow and it could be completely different
Hello Sarah! Mine will change tomorrow too.! Dirty Dancing needed to be on my list too. I wanted to be baby. Fab list! I feel the need to revisit them all x
1. Somethings Gotta Give
2. A League of their own
3. Private Benjamin
4. First Wives Club
5. Baby Boom
6. Con Air
7. Die Hard (all)
8. The Rock
9. Indiana Jones (all)
10. Harry Potter (all)
The first four are pretty static. The rest will change according to mood. I also like SAtC - the first one.
Love it Helen! Honestly, if I had to guess your film choices I would not have had you down as a Die Hard fan. Love that this meme is revealing more about my online friends. The Harry Potter films are good, but I think I’ve only ever watched them all once so they couldn’t be included on my list. Am sure to revisit them with Littlest though. x
I love a bit of macho in a white vest
Ooooh, don’t we all
x
Talking of macho in a white vest I saw Red (with Bruce Willis) the other night. Loved it and him. Plus he looks better in it than he did in Die Hard 4.
A good list with many of my faves but here’s my top ten
1 The Station Agent
2 Big Fish
3 Kill Bill
4 Winter’s Bone
5 Juno
6 Withnail and I
7 Deliverance
8 Couscous
9 Up
10 ET
John - you’ve a couple on there that I wanted on my list. Although ‘Up’ would not appear. Never ever has a film upset me so much. Devastating! Thanks for joing in.

8. Leon
9. The Nightmare before Christmas- my favourite Tim Burton Film

Your film choices are closest to my ‘ones left off my list’. Love Amelie so much, nearly called daughter Amelie. Oh, and Firefly is such an ace show. And Tarantino vampires… yes, love your list x
Thanks to Lovely Mary I realised that I had committed an absolute CRIME in unintentionally leaving Priscilla Queen of the desert - LOVE that film Sooooo much! That’ll have to be number 13 then : )
hahaha! That is a CRIME! Go to film-list-prison x
I enjoyed this so much I wrote my own blog post on it (with a link back, of course).
Thanks for the link back and for playing along x
I think I might write my own post of my favourite films, but I erm.. named my eldest son after the boy in ET!
