Weekend Viewing: Damages, Season 3

by Caroline Smailes on October 17, 2010

Very aware that GobbleDEEbook is fast approaching and I’ve been stressing about it far too much, since Thursday I’ve actually taken some time off and watched the ENTIRE (13 episodes, so that’d be approximately 550 minutes of me relaxing!) Season 3 of Damages.

For those who don’t know, the oh so gripping legal drama follows the turbulent lives of Patty Hewes ( Glenn Close), a high-stakes litigator and her ambitious, former protégé Ellen Parsons (Rose Byrne). Damages also stars Tate Donovan (TV’s The O.C.), Lily Tomlin (TV’s The West Wing) and the very gorgeous Ted Danson (TV’s Cheers). Season 3 is inspired by recent worldwide economic events and the season-long storyline sees litigator Patty Hewes confronting the most challenging case of her career. Patty and her trusted lieutenant Tom Shayes meet their match against the manipulative Tobin family empire.

Damages is a complicated drama, one that demands attention from the viewer, but I like that it does. It’s all about season-long storylines and non-linear storytelling (which means flashforwards, flashbacks, red herrings!). I like being stimulated and a little bit confused at times (other series that I’m particularly enjoying at the moment are Medium season 2 and Criminal Minds season 4 and I’ve just finished season 3 of True Blood). I don’t really want to give too much away but I would say that I loved the return of Ted Danson as Arthur Frobisher and Glen Close is (as always) utterly stunning.

If I’m entirely honest, I didn’t really enjoy season 2 as much as season 1, so was a little reluctant to invest my precious relaxation time in season 3. I shouldn’t have been reluctant. Season 3 is very much a return to all that I loved about season 1. Action packed, intriguing, twisty and full of spot on acting! For me season 3 is on a par with season 1 and I officially LOVE Damages very much. Is this the final ever series? Are the rumours true? You know, there is part of me that hopes it is as too many series churn out the same stories week after week and lose viewer interest. I think to go out on a high is the best way. I also think that Damages is possibly the best legal drama out there and better than The West Wing (Keris may never speak to me again!)

Oh, and, as always, any series or film recommendations are always welcomed…

You can buy Damages - Season 3 [DVD] here.

I agree that season 3 is better than season 2, but the first season was absolutely fantastic TV, head and shoulders above most stuff that is churned out, but I also think they should leave it at 3 series. Go out on a high. I love Glenn Close too , she’s one of my favourites actors. Fantastic.

Oooh, I’m pleased to hear that Season 3 is a return to form as, like you, I was underwhelmed by Season 2. Excellent, will add it to Amazon wishlist. I’m just about to start watching ‘Breaking Bad’ which I’ve heard great things about.

Oh yes, do! We tend to like the same things, so I’ll be sure to check out ‘Breaking Bad’. Have you tried Medium yet? Loving it! x

I’m watching Damages on a Monday night, but no idea what series it is :-) It is very good thought. Glen Close still scares me after playing Cruella De Vil and funnily enough that was on the box yesterday!

I will try Damages. But I highly doubt it to be as brilliant as The West Wing. That is the best show ever. I’ve watched it, ooh, at least four times all the way through (that’s every season). And it never disappoints. Have you managed season 1 of TWW yet?

I just don’t ‘get’ TWW. Really, I don’t… I tried 3 episodes and then gave up. Why? Why don’t I get it? :(

Caroline, I’d never seen Damages until last night when I stayed up till 4am watching the first series back to back. Louche, I know but I have just finished my copy edits and I am partying with the remote. It was fabulouso ! But I’ve woken up this morning with a sense of paranoia that Glen Close is watching me and I want to shower instead of bath. Will this wear off ? And where did Ted Danson get all that hair from because he was defintely bald the last time I saw him ?

Copy edits! Squee - when are you out? Glen Close looks like my mum - really, it’s all a bit worrying. I fear the fear will never wear off and for me it’s even more confused and complicated :) Ted Danson is a fox!

My series recommendation would be Mad Men, awesome show and so so fashionable - I got the boxset for the first three seasons and am working through it at an alarming rate, that and Supernatural at any rate! Happy viewing :)
