The Exotic Meat Cookbook: From Antelope to Zebra by Jeanette Edgar and Rachel Godwin

by Caroline Smailes on November 30, 2009

(Note to reader: I’ve got 3 COPIES of ‘The Exotic Meat Cookbook: From Antelope to Zebra’ to give away and all details can be found at the end of this post)

In the UK we tend to be offered chicken, beef, pork and lamb, but increasingly we’re seeing (through celebrity chefs) exotic tasty meats being talked about and prepared. Supermarkets and internet suppliers like the Alternative Meats company are now stocking kangaroo, bison and other unusual meats (at surprisingly reasonable prices) but still the majority of us seem to be almost too afraid to try or prepare them.

‘The Exotic Meat Cookbook: From Antelope to Zebra’ will tackle any fear, hesitation or resistance to change. This hardback, glossy cookbook will help to push us all outside of our cooking comfort zone and towards the mysterious, tasty meats that are out there and available. This cookbook has been compiled by Jeanette Edgar and Rachel Godwin, the women behind the award-winning Alternative Meats company (all meats can be ordered direct from their website), and includes recipes for camel, kangaroo, ostrich, rose veal, wild boar, crocodile and many many more. But the beauty of this cookbook is that the exotic meats sit alongside more accessible meats such as pheasant, quail and guinea fowl, and also recipes for mutton and veal, rabbit and hare, which many local butchers and supermarkets stock.

Most of you know that my (now) twelve year old son is a budding chef, so when this book arrived it was stolen by him. He has his own collection of cookbooks and always prepares our Sunday family meal. We had homemade pheasant burgers and homemade chips for our Sunday lunch yesterday. My son was able to follow the recipe with ease (and a little help from G to mince the pheasant breasts). The end result was utterly delicious. He is now itching to cook crocodile!

‘The Exotic Meat Cookbook’ is a workable, viable cookbook and not at all a gimmick. The easy to follow recipes are beautifully presented and the entire book has a comprehensible structure. Although much of the meat is exotic, the recipes themselves are often familiar with a modern and quirky twist.

This book would be an ideal Christmas present for foodies, budding chefs and for anyone who would like to cook something just that little bit different.

You can buy a copy of ‘The Exotic Meat Cookbook: From Antelope to Zebra’ by Jeanette Edgar and Rachel Godwin HERE (currently half price)

And, Mr Pack at The Friday Project has agreed that I can give away 3 COPIES of ‘The Exotic Meat Cookbook’. All you have to do is leave a ‘please pick me’ comment by 3pm (GMT) December 4, then I’ll pop all names in a mug and ask a small child to select 3 winners. This competition is open to all.

Well done on your son cooking lunches. I must work harder at my own son, as I would love the odd meal to be cooked for rather than by me!

I’d love a copy of the book, mainly to send to my sister-in-law in Zambia. Some of the more ‘exotic’ meats (like crocodile!) are available there and I’m sure she’d love a chance to experiment.

When we used to keep a lot of peafowl I always wanted to try one, but never quite had the heart (and they’d have been tough old birds, as most of them lived past 12). I’d love a copy of this book so that I could see what I missed, so please-pick MEEEEE!

Please pick me because I am a Zebra AND a cannibal.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to find books which cater for Cannibal Zebras? Do you? Of course you don’t.

I had to type this message using a pencil held in my mouth; I have no dignity.

Matt.

Pick Me!
You may have noticed in the news lately that we have a camel plague here in Australia! This book just might be the answer to our problem!
I noticed you mentioned Kangaroo, does it have Emu or Goanna or many of the Australian wildlife as exotic meat?
