During December The Book Depository are going to be auctioning fantastic signed and limited edition books on eBay, to raise money for Down Syndrome Education International, which works around the world with children with Down syndrome to promote early reading and educational research.
The Christmas Charity Auction includes books signed by Ian Rankin, Barry Humphries, Dave Eggers, Sebastian Faulks, Dennis Lehane, Charles Elton, Neal Stephenson and many more. It’s running over the next ten days, so now really is the time to grab a hold of a unique Christmas present, whilst raising money for a good cause at the same time!
There’s an official page here where more details can be found, but I urge you all to head on over to the auction and get bidding!

Just placed a bid. Thanks for the heads up.
Thanks for pointing this out. My uncle, Peter, was born with Down’s and lived to a great age. Despite the fact he was instintualionalised, which in itself is no surprise given his time, pre-war, he taught himself to read to the surprise of my aunts and uncles. Assumptions of those who are born with Down’s, be they beneficient or malign, too often ignore the individual to concentrate on the condition. Peter was everything you would expect of any individual - a pain, a love, capable of selfishisness and generosity. I can’t say I miss him - I was very young when I knew him - but I can say, as a child I reacted to him, and not his condition, as a child. So he taught me an invaluable lesson.
