Something for the Weekend: Lizzy Harrison Loses Control

by Caroline Smailes on February 18, 2011

“Lizzy Harrison isn’t a romantic heroine. Not even close. She doesn’t have a cat, owns no more shoes than the average person, and is in no way hopelessly scatty and disorganised. In fact her life is in perfect order, and that’s just how she likes it.

Okay, so she hasn’t met the right man yet, but she really doesn’t have the time what with her busy job in PR and her packed schedule of improving activities. Her diary is planned months in advance and she’s determined that nothing spontaneous will force its way into her life.

… hasn’t she?

But when her best friend Lulu questions her need for control, Lizzy starts to wonder if she needs to let go a little. So when she’s thrown into the arms of her boss’s number one client, notorious comedian (and love-rat) Randy Jones, she reluctantly relaxes her hold on routine. Lizzy Harrison is about to find out that losing control could win her more than she had ever imagined…”

Written by Pippa Wright, ‘Lizzy Harrison Loses Control‘ is one of the most original voices in female fiction that I’ve read for for ages. The story has balls, the characters use language that I use with my friends, it’s current, it’s unapologetic and, clearly, it’s refreshing on SO many levels. It’s been weeks since I finished this debut, but I’m still thinking about the characters and wondering what happened next (which makes me sound rather odd!). Seriously, I had a period of mourning after finishing this novel and couldn’t read another book for days (yes, days!).

This novel is impressive, it is crafted and controlled. Pippa Wright’s strong cast of characters compliment each other and Lizzy so perfectly, with Camilla showing the organised and vulnerable Lizzy, with Lulu reminding me of Iona from Pretty in Pink, with Dan being delicious and with Randy being a bad boy who you can’t help but fancy in a totally dysfunctional way (we’ve all thought we could change a bad boy, haven’t we?). There is no weakness, no dips in the story that you want to skim and this, for me, makes this debut novel very special (I’m gushing, aren’t I?).

‘Lizzy Harrison Loses Control‘ has an edge, is heaped full of heart and doesn’t at all take itself too seriously. Out March 18, ‘Lizzy Harrison Loses Control’ by Pippa Wright is truly and absolutely recommended.

Wow, what a recommendation. If I didn’t have so many unread books waiting for me I’d be tempted to buy it. :-)

You’ll like it. It’s about someone who works in PR and very fab. I actually finished it on our last trip to your house, when I was supposed to be giving directions to G which may, just possibly, be the reason why we got lost! x
