First of all, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU. I’ve had an amazing response to my call for 100 word stories. I’ve already had over 150 entries (in less than 3 days!), I’ve been RTd and shared and favourited and emailed. I NEVER expected to have so much support, so many people wishing the project well and so many offers of help.
Almost all of the entries and support have come from people not at all involved in the short story world. They’ve come from published, unpublished and ‘first time ever trying to write a story’ writers. It shows that writers do, quite simply, want to write. And the entries have all been amazing. The song choices add a level of fun and depth to the writing. I’m truly excited about what we’re creating together.
Again, thank you ALL. And, KEEP THEM COMING. I’m very much open to advice and help and anything, really.
BUT.
It’s a known fact that I am a bit rubbish and a bit indecisive when it comes to titles. And that’s why I’m asking for help, today, again. I need to look at trying to get a front cover designed and that means I need a title.
So, could you throw some ideas my way? Please. The main points are:
- The stories are all flash fiction of 100 words or fewer.
- The stories are all inspired by a piece of music or a song.
- I’d quite like the cover and content to be influenced by vinyl - so 33/45RPM could be a theme. I may go for 78 stories being included or 33 or 45.
- This is going to be an eBook.
- There is a fun element to this writing.
So… any ideas?
Either leave a comment or tweet me (@Caroline_S with the hashtag #XboxMoreThanGames to ensure I see it).

I’m collecting some ideas from Facebook and Twitter here:
Sally Quilford: A Century of Stories? or The Top 100 Stories? (to go with hit list theme?)
Debs Riccio ”100 in with a bullet” (is that what they used to say on the radio Top 40 chart?)
@pc_wheeler “Story Pops: Bite-Sized Fiction”
@Laura_E_James ‘Brief Charity’ or ‘Charity Briefs’
@AliceBlundrland ‘Short on words - Big on ispiration?’ or ‘Short and Tweet?’ or ‘Short and Sweet’
@Mblobs - ‘Centipedes’
@changurisphoto “C Notes” (the C equals a hundred in roman numerals)
I like the ‘Top Ten’ feel…
And more…
@eThrillerWriter How about ‘Sound Bites’?
@writeleighso ‘Flash Hits’ (shows my age!) or ‘The Lit Parade’ or ‘The Top Shorty’.
Juke Box Stories
Have not had time to write one yet, but will try.
Love Juke Box Stories!
How about:
A Gathering of Notes
Vinyl Grooves
Rounds Per Minute
Flash Forward: Music to Listen To and the Words Inspired by Songs (or something less wordy LOL)
Belinda-Jane Salt - jamming with words
Belinda-Jane Salt - rocking all over the word
Belinda-Jane Salt - waxing lyrical
Belinda-Jane Salt - word bytes
I like Juke Box Stories
Thanks Cally! Old sub editor here. Titles were part of my professional life for years…. Love them and often start with them when writing myself.
Top of the Plots.
Based on the singles chart show’Top of the Pops’ of course.
“Turntales”
33 stories inspired by music
I too am rubbish at coming up with titles…I shall put my thinking cap on but i’m not promising anything!
C x
Thank you!
I am liking ‘Flash Hits’ or ‘Turntables’ or ‘Juke Box Stories’ - then ’33/45/? stories inspired by music…
Now which to go with? x
Gordon in Tune.
Story Mixers
Melody Teller
I love the idea of this, how about (if not already suggested) Musical Tales or Pop . Loving Juke Box Stories.
I’m loving ‘Juke Box Stories’
Have also had:
@mherp “the turntable diaries”
@ian_hocking ‘Quick As A’ / ‘Flash Forward’?
@djkirkby ‘Flashers’
@wildelycreative SHORTSounds
@Mblobs Centibits. Or Centipede Chops. Or Centipede Cutlets.
Story Shuffle
As you have a song that goes with each story, you could use the title ‘Double A-sides.’ Some seven inches were released like that back in the day. If you need a subheading then ‘Double A-sides: stories from songs.’
Juke Box Stories is brilliant
Thanks everyone. I do like Dan’s idea: ‘Double A-sides: stories from songs.’ Am going to ask Mr Publisher for some advice… x
Maybe “100 RPM” to chime with the vinyl idea?
It has been suggested 100 WPM?
I love Juke Box Stories or Flash Hits. I would amend the first to Juke Box Drabbles as Drabble is the slang for a 100 word story.
So pleased you are all liking Juke Box Stories. The point is that Stories echoes ‘Jury’ as in Juke Box Jury of yore.
I love Juke Box Stories - most readers will get the JBJ connection, and it works anyway, even for people too young to remember! If you can see a pattern emerging amongst the stories you could group them (ie stories that deal with love, or loss; crime stories; city life etc) and use some of the other great ideas for the sub-sections.
I tweeted you what was possibly the worst title EVER (and shall not repeat it here). Sorry to say I haven’t managed to come up with a better title. *slinks away*
Oh cruel, DJ. We feel deprived now!
I like *100WPM* - ties up the vinyl and the writing.
SK
100 for One in Four
Vinyl Muse
Vinyl Flashes
I’m not good at this either.
