Billionaire Boy - David Walliams

(Note to reader: I’ve got 5 SIGNED copies of David Walliams’ new book ‘Billionaire Boy’ to give away and all details can be found at the end of this post)

“Joe has a lot of reasons to be happy. About a billion of them, in fact. You see, Joe’s rich. Really, really rich. Joe’s got his own bowling alley, his own cinema, even his own butler who is also an orangutan. He’s the wealthiest twelve-year-old in the land.

But Joe isn’t happy. Why not? Because he’s got a billion pounds… and not a single friend.

But then someone comes along, someone who likes Joe for Joe, not for his money. The problem is, Joe’s about to learn that when money is involved, nothing is what it seems. The best things in life are free, they say – and if Joe’s not careful, he’s going to lose them all…”

This is a very perfect story from the super talented Mr Walliams, author of ‘The Boy in the Dress’ and ‘Mr Stink’ (as well as being rather well known for writing three bestselling series of ‘Little Britain’ with Matt Lucas).

David Walliams is a very talented man. And what I really enjoyed about this book (apart from the fact that it’s genuinely funny) is that it has such charm and innocence oozing from it. I think if we crossed ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ with ‘Danny Champion of the World’ and ‘Mr Gum’, then the result would be something close to ‘Billionaire Boy’. And that, for me, makes this book really rather special.

In the silly materialistic society that we live, ‘Billionaire Boy’ offers a proper prodding into what really matters. The themes and the conclusions reached are the kind of thoughts and ideas that I want my children to consider. There is nothing preachy about this book, more that it is full of clever and funny. ‘Billionaire Boy’ is a little gift, a story that Middlest already wants to read again.

‘Billionaire Boy’ is tender, laugh out loud funny and seriously really REALLY good. I can’t believe that I’ve only just discovered David Walliams’ children’s books (seriously, where have I been?). I really and truly recommend that you grab yourself a copy of ‘Billionaire Boy’ this festive season.

Also, it’s worth drawing your attention to an additional competition that HarperCollins are running in the hardback edition, to win a day as a billionaire in London. It runs through their ‘Billionaire Boy’ website and you can also win a years supply of toilet paper! What joy, of joys. (Is it wrong that I really want to win the toilet paper?)

But, for now, I’ve 5 SIGNED copies of David Walliams’ new book ‘Billionaire Boy’ to give away. Simply leave a ‘please pick me’ comment by 3pm (GMT) November 26, then I’ll pop all names in a mug and ask a small child to select 5 winners. This competition is open to all.
