As any visitor to my house will tell you, I am prone to forcing people to partake in singing games. We have a variety of SingStar, SingIt (which is pants) and Rock Band, so We Sing was a very welcomed addition. It arrived just in time for Easter visitors, and more than that, in time for Easter visitors who like to sing. Fabulous!
I’ve just looked on Amazon and seen some negative reviews of We Sing and I think that some reviewers are missing ‘the point’. The most important thing about this is to remember that it’s a Wii game, not at all a hardcore singing game but rather a party game that involves singing (are you still with me?). And Wii games have certain characteristics: a Wii game involves group participation, they are the new parlour game and the new generation of board game. And whilst We Sing might not be the ‘best game that involves singing’ on the market, it is definitely ‘the best singing party game’ on the market (are you still with me?). All you have to do is sing, unlike Rock Band that is more hardcore and involves skill (oh, the skill). And, as I have found out this weekend, We Sing comes into its own in a party atmosphere, after a few glasses of wine and surrounded by friends. It’s a game that anyone can play and has been designed as such.
Perhaps the biggest weakness of the game is the ‘limited’ song choice and the inability to download more. However the 30 songs are chart toppers and have been selected to do a particular ‘job’ and that is to give everyone who plays that ‘one song’ that they’re dying to sing. For me it was James Morrison & Nelly Furtado’s Broken Strings, but for a seventy year old lady it was Tom Jones’ Delilah, Eldest liked Lily Allen’s The Fear and for a duet with my ‘singing partner’ it was Pussycat Dolls’ Don’t Cha (with dance moves)(much to Eldest’s embarrassment). I think the reference to ‘limited’ song choice comes from comparing it to SingStar, where you buy tracks from a specific era, or band or genre. We Sing is about variety and ‘something for everyone’, which is where the party game comes into it.
We Sing allows for up to 4 mics (2 can be bought with the game) and that means 4 singers. At first I was unsure if I’d like it, mainly because I’m a huge fan of SingStar, but with 4 players We Sing really comes alive. There are Solo, Party and Karaoke modes, but for me the best features are in Party Mode. Here we very much enjoyed Versus, Group Battle, Pass The Mic, and First to 5000 . Pass the Mic is perfect (on ‘hard’!) after a few glasses of wine… oh yes, oh yes.
I am now going to perfect my Pussycat Dolls dance before my Eurovision party…

Oh…. I’ve come to the wrong place. Where’s the Caroline Smailes that wrote the moving, unputdownable, reason-for-me-being-knackered-today, gritty book I’m reading right now?
Just going to scroll back up and read that post again…. I’m sure I saw something about a Eurovision party….. Surely not…
Twitter: @rachcarterOh Rachel - you did make me laugh. I am am currently making origami boats out of In Search of Adam with my daughter, whilst listening to JLS. That kinda sums up my life. If I was as dark as my imagination, then I’d be such a pleasure to be with
Thank you SO SO SO much for reading my words and for this utterly fab comment xx
You rock!
Twitter: @nikperringWell, I am in awe that you are even brave enough to clutch a mic, if only at home… I am not sure I would be able to do that, not even if my life depended on a handful of notes strung together by the noose of tragedy. Having said that… I’ve been known to ’sing’ at Tom Jones’s concerts but it’s ok when you’re among 13,000 other saddos. I did keep the knickers on though.
Twitter: @stephanellawOh that does sound like a lot of fun - particularly eldest’s embarrassment - but I really would need a LOT of wine to do it…
Beam me up, Mr LaForge. Energise! Now would be a good time.
Twitter: @DarkSkipperGreat review. I love these games although it would take a lorra lorra booze to get me singing in front of human beings. Boyf and I spent Sunday round at bro’s house with his wife and her family and discovered Just Dance. Great game and I actually won a few rounds which is weird as I cannot dance for toffee.
Twitter: @lilysheehan.comNik Perring - I know
Steph - you kept your knickers on? Yeah yeah, I believe you!
JJ Beattie - come have lots of wine with us
Captain Black - come back, come back…
Lily S - I’d love Just Dance! It’s on my wishlist.
